The Flu Mist vaccine (intranasal) is recommended for healthy individuals
(without any chronic condition) ages 2 through 49 that are not pregnant. The
2009 HINI Live attenuated vaccine does not contain preservative (thimerosal).
The nasal spray flu vaccine is made with live, weakened virus that cannot grow
at normal body temperature. The virus is attenuated (WEAKENED) and CANNOT CAUSE ILLNESS. Transmission of viruses after vaccination to close contacts is
rare. Therefore, people who have contact with others with lesser degrees of immunosuppression, such as diabetes, asthma, allergies, etc., can get the nasal
spray vaccine. Only those people who are in contact with somebody who has
severely weakened immune system should wait 7 days before coming into contact
(for example, people with stem cell transplants).
The nasal mist vaccine can be given to people with minor illnesses (e.g.,
diarrhea, mild upper respiratory track infections with or without fever).
However, the vaccination with a nasal spray should be delayed in case of nasal
congestion as this might limit the delivery of the vaccine. Breast feeding
mothers can receive the mist as well. For more information please visit
