Indiana Youth Smoking

Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death and disease in the U.S.
Smoking alone is responsible for more than 438,000 premature deaths in the U.S. States annually; nearly 9,700 of these deaths happen to Hoosiers.
In Indiana,
more than 10,200 youth become new daily smokers each year

Smoking rate increase as a youth ages.

Approximately 3% of 6th grade students are current increasing to 15% by the time student are in the 8th grade.

Once youth reach 10th grade smoking rates jump to 23% then increasing to 28% when they are in 11th grade

Smoking rates for Hoosier middle school and high school youth are similar to the U.S. rates.

6th to 8th grade
U.S. = 8.1%
Indiana = 7.7%
A 21% decline from 9.8% in 2000 to 7.7% in 2006

9th to 12th grade
U.S. = 23.0%
Indiana = 23.2%
A 27% decline from 31.6% in 2000 to 23.2% in 2006

Note: Currently, U.S. rates for youth smoking behaviors are not yet available. The statistics shown above are from 2004 for 6th - 8th grade, and 2005 for 9th - 12th grade, respectively. The data for Indiana reflects youth smoking rates for 2006.
